The Allied Invasion of Italy continued;the Allies were moving toward the Gustav Line, which was directly in front of Monte Cassino.  The monastery at the top of the mountain gave the German defenders a great advantage of sight lines all around.  The Allies would be stymied here for several months.

The Japanese completed the Burma Railway from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma.  Many of the laborers were Allied prisoners of war.  Construction of one of the larger bridges was the subject of the movie The Bridge on the River Kwai.
