November 4th:   In port all day.  Captain Visser was relieved of command by Captain Bradley.  Captain Visser to report for duty to the amphibious service, ComPhibPac. A number of officers and men reporting onboard for transportation. Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

November 5th:  In port all day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, moderate breezes.

November 6th:  In port all day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate breezes.

The Japanese began their balloon-bombing of the United States, taking advantage of the strengthened jet stream in the Pacific during the winter months.

Ravenna, Italy fell to the Allies.  The Allies have a goal of capturing Bologna by the end of the year.

Having completed action at Leyte Gulf, Daly with its task group is returning to Seeadler Harbor.  Kamikaze damage continues for the ships remaining at Leyte; one destroyer is sunk, and several ships are damaged, including 2 carriers.

October 26th:.  Patrolling in Leyte Gulf all day.  Fueling in afternoon.  Enemy aircraft attacked in the evening, no damage. Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 27th:  Patrolling in Leyte Gulf all day.  Searching for sonar contacts in the morning.  Rescued downed pilot in the afternoon.    Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 28th:  On patrol all day in Leyte Gulf, fueling in afternoon. Temperatures 70s, moderate breezes.

October 29th:   On patrol all day in Leyte Gulf.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes changing to gale force winds up to 40 knots late evening with heavy weather and rain squalls.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf concluded on October 26th.  Japanese losses are severe; 4 carriers (including Zuikaku, the last carrier from the Pearl Harbor raid), 3 battleships, 10 cruisers and 9 destroyers.  More Japanese ships are damaged and some are sunk in the following days.

US Navy losses are 3 small carriers, 2 destroyers, 1 destroyer escort and 1 PT boat.  However, a new and terrifying phenomenon begins as the Japanese send Kamikaze aircraft against US Navy ships, and sink light carrier St. Lo.  The danger from these attacks will get much worse and last for the rest of the war.

October 22nd:. At sea all day supporting operations in Leyte Gulf.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 23rd:  Again operating in Leyte Gulf.  Fueling in afternoon.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 24th:  In Leyte Gulf.  Late evening deployed for battle against approaching Japanese fleet.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 25th:  Japanese fleet approaching about 2:30 AM.  PT boats attack first, followed by destroyers.  Daly with 4 other destroyers commenced torpedo attack at about 3:30 AM, then fired on enemy ships.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

Daly took part in the Battle of Surigao Strait as part of the destroyer attacks.  Three Japanese battleships and three destroyers were sunk during the action.   This was part of the larger battle all around the Philippines in which many Japanese ships were sunk, including Musashi (with sister ship Yamato the most powerful battleships in the world), and three Japanese carriers.

A mistake or miscommunication in the fleet left the landing areas uncovered except for a few destroyers, destroyer escorts and small carriers.  The Japanese Central Force, thought to have turned back after losing Musashi, reversed course and could have devastated the troops in the landing zone at Leyte.  The heroism of this handful of small ships in turning back this large battleship/heavy cruiser fleet is told in the book The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors.

October 19th:  Another day at sea with the fleet.  By night time, fleet has reached the area near the Philippines.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 20th:  Operated in Leyte Gulf all day.  Bombarded shore positions, and supported landings on Dio Island and the main landings on Leyte.  Some Japanese aircraft attacking the fleet. Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 21st:  Supporting operations in Leyte Gulf, including shore bombardments.  Some air attacks during the day, one cruiser damaged.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

On the 20th, General MacArthur fulfilled his promise to return to the Philippines, as he strode onshore at Leyte.  The main force of troops was landed on the 20th, with landings continuing the next day.  

The bulk of the Japanese fleet was moving toward Leyte to contest the invasion.  The US carriers continued to attack all around the islands, and sank a number of Japanese ships.  Several US Navy ships were damaged during this time.

Allied forces captured Belgrade, Yugoslavia on the 20th.  The Battle of Aachen concluded on the 21st as the Allies occupied the city.  The Greek government in exile returned to Athens.

October 15th: For the first time the deck log entry contains the destination of Leyte, Philippines.  Daly continues with the fleet all day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 16th: Underway all day.  Several destroyers refueling from heavy cruisers in the fleet. Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 17th: Underway all day, refueled in the morning from cruiser Phoenix.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.  

Landings are conducted on the islands at the entrance to Leyte Gulf in an attempt to keep the element of surprise; however, a warning is transmitted by a station on one of the islands gives the Japanese a forewarning of the invasion.

Riga, Latvia falls to the Soviets on the 15th.  Soviet forces also attempt to enter East Prussia. 

US forces begin a move toward Bologna, Italy.

October 11th: Fleet underway toward the Philippines.  Daly in anti-submarine screen.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

October 12th: Underway all day and reached Hollandia in the afternoon and anchored.  Radar exercises in the morning while at sea. Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate winds.

October 13th: Left port in the early afternoon; patrolling with fleet rest of day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.  

Carrier strikes on the 10th at Okinawa and nearby result in the sinking of a number of cargo and support ships.  Similar attacks are done at Formosa on the 12th  with more japanese ships sunk.  Carrier Franklin is damaged by a kamikaze but remains on duty, and heavy cruiser Canberra is torpedoed and put under tow as the task forces retire.  Light cruiser Houston also needed to be towed.

Fighting continues on all major fronts in Europe; France, Northern Italy,  Romania, Poland and Finland. The Germans are stymied or pushed back in each area.  Athens was liberated on the 13th.

October 5th: Stayed in port all day and received fuel late morning,  Temperatures 80s-90s, reached 100 mid-day, light breezes.

Fleet is exercising for the upcoming invasion of the Philippines.  Many ships are arriving at the harbor, including transports.

The battle for Aachen, Germany began on the Western Front. Soviet troops begin an offensive to isolate German forces in the Baltic countries.

Morotai was secured on the 4th but occasional skirmishes continued.

Large carrier raids continue in the Philippines, with many more Japanese ships sunk.  The Ulithi Atoll was occupied by the navy and will become an important advance base for the rest of the war.

The invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines is now scheduled for October 20.  

Operation Market Garden ends in failure as the Allies do not get across the Rhine River into Germany.  Advances continue in Italy and Soviet troops enter Albania.

Battleship West Virginia reaches Pearl Harbor, completing the re-floating and refurbishing of the sunken or damaged battleships salvaged from the Pearl Harbor raid.

Allies take Boulougne, France and now move toward Calais.  Soviet forces take Talinn, Estonia, and other Soviet forces enter Hungary.  Allies make advances in Italy; liberated, San Marino declares war on Germany.

Battles on Morotai and Peleliu are just beginning after landings are completed.

The invasion of Leyte Island in the Philippines is now scheduled for October 20.  

Soviet troops occupy Sofia, Bulgaria.  Operation Market Garden began in the Netherlands. San Marino, in Italy, was occupied by the Allies.

Hitler approved plans for the Ardennes Offensive, which would later become the Battle of the Bulge.

September 13th: Proceeding to Morotai operation.  Mail received in the morning. Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

September 14th: Met attack force set for invasion.  Temperatures 80s, light to moderate breezes.

September 15th: Reached the invasion area, provided anti-submarine screen for cruisers, also bombarded the island. Landings completed, patrolling the rest of the day near Morotai Island.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

The Navy conducts extensive attacks in the central Philippines.  A number of ships are sunk and resistance is light.  Information is received that the Japanese garrison on Leyte is small.  Admiral Halsey suggests moving up the Philippines timetable from the currently scheduled December invasion to October.

The Peleliu invasion was launched on the 15th. The fight for the island would be intense, with large casualty numbers, and conducted in oppressive heat.  Though a small island, its capture would take a full month.  This invasion came on the same day as the invasion of Morotai Island.

 Romania signs an armistice and joins the Allies.  Canadian troops capture Le Havre, France with 12000 German troops.  The Battle of Rimini begins in northeast Italy.  Soviet forces move on Riga, Latvia.

September 11th: Reached Humboldt Bay anchorage, Hollandia.  Fueling in morning.  Late evening, left port en route to support the invasion of Morotai Island.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

Navy conducted raids on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines.  Several Japanese cargo vessels were sunk.  

Roosevelt and Churchill met in Quebec to discuss the British Navy's role in the Pacific War.

Luxembourg was liberated, and the Allies reached Zeebrugge, Belgium. near the border with the Netherlands.  The Allies in some places had reached the German border.

September 6th: In port all day again.  More ships have been entering the harbor the last few days, including the battleship New Jersey.  Temperatures 80s, light to moderate breezes.

September 7th: Another day in port.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

The Navy bombarded the Palau islands and Yap, which are southwest of the Marianas, and on the way to the Philippines.  There was little Japanese resistance.  The Japanese were reserving their remaining forces for contesting the Philippines.

A Japanese cargo ship carrying US prisoners was sunk by a US submarine.  Of the 750 US prisoners, 688 died as a result of the sinking.

The Soviet Army continued its advance in Romania, and declared war on Bulgaria.  Ypres, in Belgium, was liberated by Polish Allied troops.

Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima are attacked several times by the Navy.  This is to try to neutralize the islands, but also to divert attention from the locations of the next US advances.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

Brussels and Dieppe, France were liberated.  The Soviet Army occupied Bucharest and  Ploesti in Romania.

August 27th:. Force of cruisers and destroyers en route to New Guinea; first stop is at Milne Bay.  Gunnery exercises in the afternoon.  Temperatures 60s-70s, moderate breezes.

August 28th: Proceeding to Milne Bay; training exercises during the day.  Temperatures 70s, light to moderate breezes.

August 29th: Continuing to Milne Bay; exercises during the day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

August 30th: Reached Milne Bay in the morning and took on fuel. Received men on board for transfer to Seeadler Harbor for other duty.  Captain's mast assigned punishment for about 50 men who had gone absent over leave (AOL) during the stay in port at Sydney; some of the men who were AOL longer were deferred to deck court.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

General DeGaulle and the Free French forces took control in Paris.  Soviet troops continue to advance in Lithuania, Ukraine, and Romania.

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

August 23rd:. In port at Sydney for the 10th straight day. Temperatures 60s, light to moderate winds.

August 24th: Another day in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, mild winds.

August 25th: A number of men were absent over leave during the day.  Temperatures 50s, light winds.

August 26th: In the afternoon, Daly put out to sea for Seeadler Harbor, New Guinea. Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

Daly has spent 12 days in port at Sydney.  Now will begin the final push for the recapture of the Philippines.

August 19th:. Remaining in port at Sydney, Australia.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

August 20th: Another day in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light breezes.

August 21st: All day in port at Sydney.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

August 22nd: Remaining in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, moderate breezes.

Daly sailors are enjoying liberty in port at Sydney.  Temperatures are cool as this is still winter in Australia.
