August 30, 1944 - Wednesday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

August 27th:. Force of cruisers and destroyers en route to New Guinea; first stop is at Milne Bay.  Gunnery exercises in the afternoon.  Temperatures 60s-70s, moderate breezes.

August 28th: Proceeding to Milne Bay; training exercises during the day.  Temperatures 70s, light to moderate breezes.

August 29th: Continuing to Milne Bay; exercises during the day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

August 30th: Reached Milne Bay in the morning and took on fuel. Received men on board for transfer to Seeadler Harbor for other duty.  Captain's mast assigned punishment for about 50 men who had gone absent over leave (AOL) during the stay in port at Sydney; some of the men who were AOL longer were deferred to deck court.  

Left in the afternoon to continue to Seeadler Harbor in the Admiralty Islands. Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate breezes.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

General DeGaulle and the Free French forces took control in Paris.  Soviet troops continue to advance in Lithuania, Ukraine, and Romania.

August 26, 1944 - Saturday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

August 23rd:. In port at Sydney for the 10th straight day. Temperatures 60s, light to moderate winds.

August 24th: Another day in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, mild winds.

August 25th: A number of men were absent over leave during the day.  Temperatures 50s, light winds.

August 26th: In the afternoon, Daly put out to sea for Seeadler Harbor, New Guinea. Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

Daly has spent 12 days in port at Sydney.  Now will begin the final push for the recapture of the Philippines.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

The Liberation of Paris was completed with the German surrender of the city on August 25th.  General DeGaulle leads a liberation parade in Paris the next day.

August 19th:. Remaining in port at Sydney, Australia.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

August 20th: Another day in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light breezes.

August 21st: All day in port at Sydney.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

August 22nd: Remaining in port.  Temperatures 50s-60s, moderate breezes.

Daly sailors are enjoying liberty in port at Sydney.  Temperatures are cool as this is still winter in Australia.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

The Liberation of Paris was begun on the 19th when the Free French forces began an uprising in the city.

August 15th:. Moored at Sydney, Australia all day.  Temperatures 50s, light winds.

August 16th: All day in port at Sydney.  Temperatures 50s, light winds.

August 17th: Another day in port. Temperatures 60s, light winds.

August 18th: Remained in port.  Temperatures 50s, light breezes.

Daly sailors are enjoying liberty in port at Sydney.

The island of Morotai is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.  Biak Island fell to the Allies on the 17th.

Landings begin in southern France by an Allied invasion force.

August 14, 1944 - Monday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

August 11th:. At sea all day en route to Sydney, Australia,  Temperatures 70s, light winds.

August 12th: At sea all day.  Temperatures 60s, winds up to 20 knots in the evening.

August 13th: Arrived Sydney mid-morning, tied up at Wooloomooloo dock. Moored for the rest of the day. Temperatures 60s, winds dying down through the day, light breezes in the evening..

August 14th: Moored all day.  Temperatures 50s-60s, light winds.

Daly has been at sea for some time now, and participated in a number of invasions in the New Guinea theater.  The crew is no doubt looking forward to some shore leave while in Sydney.

Intense fighting continues around the French city of Falaise in Normandy.  In Italy, the allies have control of Florence.

August 10, 1944 - Thursday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

August 7th:. Moored all day at Seeadler Harbor, Admiralty Islands.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

August 8th:Underway at 3:30 PM for Sydney, Austrialia. Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

August 9th: At sea all day passing east of New Guinea.  Temperatures 80s, moderate breezes.

August 10th: Moving south, stopped an Milne Bay, New Guinea to deliver some passengers there and pick up others going to Sydney; resumed course to Sydney for the rest of the day. Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

Guam falls to US forces on the 10th. 

As the cleanup continues in New Guinea, preparations are underway for the next step toward the Philippines.  President Roosevelt has decided that the Philippines will be the next top priority in the Pacific War.  

The next target - the island of Morotai - is scheduled for invasion on September 15th.  Morotai is about 500 miles WNW of Biak Island.  It is about half way to the Philippines.

August 3rd:. Left late afternoon to return to Seeadler Harbor, Admiralty Islands. Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate breezes.

August 4th:Underway all day. Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate breezes.

August 5th: Arrived Seeadler Harbor early afternoon, moored rest of day,  Fueling in the evening.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light to moderate breezes.

August 6th: Moored all day at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

Fighting continues to recapture Guam in the Marianas.  The Sansapor landings had met only light resistance, and work was soon begun on airfields, radars, and bases.

Allied forces captured Florence, Italy on August 4th.

August 2, 1944 - Wednesday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

July 30th:. Arrived early morning at Cape Sansapor and began patrol duty north of landing zone.  Continued patrol all day.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

July 31st:Finished patrol duty and proceeded to anchorage at Mios Woendi in the Papaido Islands, near Biak Island.  Fueling late morning; moored for the rest of the day.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

August 1st: Moored all day at Mios Woendi.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

August 2nd: Moored all day at Mios Woendi. Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

The successful landings around Cape Sansapor began the final operations in New Guinea.  Once the various action areas were cleared, the next jump would be to Morotai Island, which is half the remaining distance to the Philippine Islands.

In the Marianas, Tinian is secured on August 1st.

July 29, 1944 - Saturday - 80 years ago today

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

July 26th:. Another day in port at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

July 27th: Left port and sailed all day, anti-aircraft exercises in morning.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

July 28th: Continuing to sail with fleet; more anti-aircraft exercises during the day.  Temperatures 80s, light to moderate breezes.

July 29th: Continuing to sail westward; fleet destination is the final invasion planned for New Guinea, on Cape Sansapor and nearby islands.  This invasion is the final step before jumping off for the Philippines.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

Fighting continues on Biak, Noemfoor, and other locations across northern New Guinea. 

President Roosevelt meets with Nimitz and MacArthur in Honolulu to discuss future war strategy.  MacArthur wins Roosevelt's approval for  his plan to move next to the Philippines.

In the Marianas, fighting continues on Guam and Tinian.

July 25, 1944 - Tuesday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

July 22nd:. Passed out of the harbor mid-day for AA firing exercises.  Returned to harbor for the rest of the day on completion.

July 23rd: In port at anchor all day.

July 24th: Left port early to conduct fleet exercises.  Damage control, battle casualties, engine stress, radar, smoke making, and torpedo run tests are completed.  Returned to port and refueled in the afternoon.

July 25th: In port all day; boiler fire started in engine room, had to stop boiler operation resulting in total power loss to ship. Boiler stop extinguished fire, started different boiler to restore power.

Daly has been in port at Seeadler Harbor for more than 2 weeks.

Fighting continues on Biak, Noemfoor, and other locations across northern New Guinea.  President Roosevelt is sailing for Hawaii for a conference with Nimitz and MacArthur about future war strategy.  MacArthur will be forced to defend his plan to move next to the Philippines.

In the Marianas, the invasion of Tinian begins on the 24th, and fighting continues on Guam.

The Nazi concentration camp at Majdanek, Poland is liberated by Soviet forces, and the world begins to learn of the extent of the Nazi atrocities.

July 18th:. In port all day.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

July 19th:   Another day in port. Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

July 20th: Still another day in port.  A few ships coming and going.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

July 21st: Fueling in morning, then anchored again inside the port.  Temperatures 80s, light to moderate breezes.

Daly has been in port at Seeadler Harbor for about 2 weeks.

Fighting continues on Biak, Noemfoor, and other locations across northern New Guinea.

In the Marianas, the invasion of Guam begins on the 21st.

On July 20, there was an assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler at the Wolf's Lair headquarters in Poland.  Hitler is injured but not killed, and meets Mussolini later in the day.

July 14th:. In port all day at Seeadler Harbor.

July 16th: In port all day again.

July 17th: Another day in port.  

Daly has been in port at Seeadler Harbor for about 10 days.

Fighting continues on Biak, Noemfoor, and other locations across northern New Guinea.

In the Marianas, underwater demolition teams are destroying obstacles blocking the beaches at Guam.

The battle for Caen, France continues at this time.  Parts of the city are occupied by Allied forces.

Pinsk, Belarus fell to Soviet forces on the 13th.

July 12th:  Again remained all day at Seeadler Harbor with Task Forces 73, 74, and 75.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

July 13th: Again in port all day.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

Fighting continues on Biak, Noemfoor, and other locations across northern New Guinea.

In the Marianas, Saipan had been taken, and preparations were under way for the attacks on Tinian and Guam.

The battle for Caen, France continues at this time.  Parts of the city are occupied by Allied forces.

Vilnius, Lithuania fell to Soviet forces on the 13th.

July 7th:   In port all day. Several men leave ship for transfer to New Construction division.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

July 8th:  In port all day,  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

July 9th: Left harbor for various drills including an anti-submarine exercise, then returned to port.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

July 2nd:. Passed Biak Island enroute to support invasion of Noemfoor Island, west of Biak.    Bombardment in the morning in support of landings, patrol starting late morning for the rest of the day.  Temperatures 80s, light breezes.

July 3rd:   Returning from Noemfoor Island area to Hollandia.  Arrived morning, in port the rest of the day.  Received ammunition in the afternoon.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

July 4th:  In port all day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

July 5th:  Left in the morning to return to Seeadler Harbor, New Guinea.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

Noemfoor Island was the next jump after Biak, about 50 miles further west.  Advances were done quickly as General MacArthur was intent on getting to the Philippines as soon as possible.

June 30th: Daly leaving Seeadler Harbor with task force to return to Biak Island.  Doing several training drills while in transit.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

July 1st: Proceeding to Biak Island area.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

In Italy, the Trasimene Line becomes the focus of the fighting.  

Heavy fighting continues in Normandy. Caen, France was defended from German counterattack.

Soviet armies scored victories in Belarus.

June 27, 1944 - Tuesday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

June 24th:  Another day in port.  Temperatures 80s, some light breezes.

June 25th: In port all day, changed berths, fueling in the afternoon.  Temperatures 80s, some light breezes.

June 26th: Put out to sea in the early morning.  Gunnery and ship handling drills before noon.  Rendezvous with task forces 74 and 75, assuming position in destroyer screen.  Radar and tracking exercises in the afternoon.  Night battle exercises in the late evening.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

June 27th: Simulated battle exercises in early morning.  Returned to Seeadler Harbor for the rest of the day.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

Fighting continued on Saipan, and Biak in New Guinea.

In Italy, the Trasimene Line becomes the focus of the fighting.  

Heavy fighting continues in Normandy.  Cherbourg, France was taken by the Allies.

June 23, 1944 - Friday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

June 20th:  Another day in port at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light winds.

June 21st: In port for ninth day in a row.  Swapped torpedo warheads with another US destroyer.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

June 22nd: In port all day.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

June 23rd: 11th consecutive day in port.  Temperatures 70s-80s, light breezes.

The crew is no doubt grateful for the rest but is probably looking forward to the next mission.

On the 20th, US submarines sink 2 Japanese carriers, and carrier aircraft sink another and damage 3 more.  Other ships are damaged as well, and dozens more Japanese airplanes are shot down.  These actions become known as the Battle of the Philippine Sea.  Fighting continued on Saipan, and Biak in New Guinea.

In Italy, the Trasimene Line becomes the focus of the fighting.  Heavy fighting continues in Normandy also.  Supply there was set back because of a major storm that damaged the Mulberry harbors and other equipment.  The Soviet Union began major offensives in Belarus.

The G. I. Bill was signed into law on the 22nd.

June 19, 1944 - Monday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Daly: 

USS Daly (DD-519) -New Guinea 

June 16th:  Anchored all day at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

June 17th: Again remained at anchor for the entire day.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

June 18th: Anchored all day.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

June 19th: Another day at anchor.  This is the 7th  full day in a row in port.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light breezes.

Landings continue in the Marianas at Saipan and the battle for the island begins.  On the 19th, Japanese attacks on the US fleet damage several ships, but none severely.  In the air, the Navy has superiority and is able to shoot down over 300 Japanese aircraft in one day.  The Navy looks forward to an attack on the Japanese fleet on the 20th.

In Italy, Allied advances continue north of Rome, and the British have gone as far as Assisi by the 17th.  Heavy fighting continues in Normandy also.  Supply there was set back because of a major storm that damaged the Mulberry harbors and other equipment.  

Iceland declared its independence from Denmark.

June 12th:  Arrived Seeadler Harbor at 4 PM.  Anchored rest of day, drew fuel in the late evening.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

June 13th: Anchored all day at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 80s, light winds.

June 14th: Anchored all day at Seeadler Harbor.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

June 15th: At anchor all day again.  Temperatures 80s-90s, light winds.

In the Central Pacific, carrier aircraft attack at several of the Mariana Islands on the 12th, with Navy bombardments following up on the 13th.  Landings begin at Saipan on the 15th.  A Japanese convoy approaching the area has several ships sunk by US carrier aircraft.
