Searches for Longstreet's Confederate troops continue. General Grant orders part of the army at Chattanooga to move to Knoxville; he intends to attack the Confederate army there and drive it out of East Tennessee. Grant orders more troops to Knoxville because he has information that Longstreet has been reinforced from other Confederate armies.
Sherman reaches and occupies Jackson, Mississippi on the 7th, and moves further east to Brandon the next day.
