In the Solomons, fighting continues on Bougainville Island.

The invasion of the Gilbert Islands began on the 20th, with landings on Makin and Tarawa Islands. Landings on Tarawa were hampered by an incorrect estimation of the tides on the island; many landing boats were destroyed, and Marines had to wade several hundred yards onto the island, so casualties were high.

A large nighttime air raid was conducted on Berlin on the 19th.
