Confederate cavalry crossed the Tennessee River and destroyed a train of about 300 wagons north of Chattanooga. This was along the only road that was available for delivering supplies to the Union army in the city. Union cavalry is hunting for the Confederates, but in the mean time, the army in Chattanooga has gone to two-thirds or half rations as a precaution.
General Burnside has not moved down from Knoxville, and a gap remains between the Union armies. This is the gap where the Confederate cavalry crossed the river and made the successful attack on the Union supply lines.
However, reinforcements are being rushed to the area to support the Union army. A corps under General Hooker has arrived at Stevenson, AL, and Sherman has started from Mississippi with another force, although he has only reached Memphis so far. The army in Chattanooga has noticed Confederate activity on the ridges above the city.
