At Franklin, TN, Confederate forces under General Van Dorn attacked a smaller Union force. The town was defended with 100 Union casualties and somewhat larger casualties on the rebel side.
Late in 1864, Franklin would be the site of one of the last large battles in the West.
Forces at Murfreesboro, including the 40th Indiana, have now been stationary for some time.
