March 25, 1943 - Thursday - 80 years ago today

Status - John Skinner - USS Fullam:

John was currently aboard Fullam, and would transfer to Daly in early April.

 Daly remained moored in a berth at the New York Naval Shipyard.  Supplies are being received and sailors are still reporting to the new ship, and returning from leave. 

March 22nd: Ship fueling commenced at 11:00.  Torpedoes received from the Navy Yard.   Fueling completed at 21:25.

March 23rd: Various sailors reporting onboard for temporary duty (probably for ship repairs or outfitting).  Ship prepares to get underway, and is underway at 12:14.  Daly sails to Bayonne, N.J. and enters the De-perming Station to undergo an operation to de-magnetize the hull of the ship.  This operation was started at 15:00.

March 24th:  De-perming operations were done and ship was underway by 07:08, moving to Fort Lafayette, N.Y.  and anchored by 07:54.  Ammunition loading was begun at 10:30; ship loaded initial supply of 5-inch, 40-mm, 20-mm, torpedoes, and depth charges.

March 25th: Underway 10:00 and proceeding into Long Island Sound and East River, testing boilers and inspecting ammunition magazines.  Crew to General Quarters as ship was exercised, secured from General Quarters after two hours.  Anchored in Oyster Bay on Long Island in the evening.
