On November 10th, Captain Henry Wirz, commandant of the Andersonville prison when John was held there, was hanged in Washington D. C. after being convicted of war crimes during his management of the prison camp.  His execution remains controversial as very few Confederates were executed.

Wirz and two Confederate guerilla fighters were the only ones executed for war crimes.  High ranking members of the Confederate government, including Vice President Alexander Stephens, had recently been paroled in October.
