June 1, 1865 - Thursday - 160 years ago today

Status - 40th Indiana - 4th Army Corps - 2nd Division - 2nd Brigade

The 4th Army Corps is at Nashville during this time.

---------------

Confederate President Jefferson Davis is imprisoned at Fort Monroe, VA.  Although he spends two years imprisoned, he is never tried for any actions while President of the Confederacy.

The Army of the Potomac parades through Washington, D. C. for a grand review.  Next day, Sherman's western army does the same.

Most of the Confederate forces in the trans-Mississippi surrender.  A general amnesty is declared by President Johnson for most of the Confederate soldiers.  High ranking army officers and other officials of the Confederacy, as well as the largest Southern property holders, are not included. Most are granted amnesty by the President after applying individually, and all their lands are returned (slaves, of course, are not).  The new agricultural system in the South - sharecropping - actually varies little from the days of slavery.
